How We’re Green

When producing an event that promotes a sustainable business and lifestyle, we as event planners need to ensure that the message we are advocating to the public is also being practiced behind the scenes. We are partnering with a number of other vendors to produce this event and we have asked a few of them to tell us what procedures they are implementing to create a sustainable business.

The environment is a major story at the San Jose Mercury News – not only on our pages, but in every aspect of the newspaper’s operation. Over the years, major facility upgrades at 750 Ridder Park Drive have dramatically reduced our energy and water consumption. An aggressive waste reduction program cuts the volume of chemicals and materials used (and disposed of) throughout the plant, and we work to minimize pollutants in the trash we do generate. We recycle and reclaim wherever possible – paper, batteries, lights, computer components and more. And of course the newspaper itself is printed on paper containing recycled fiber.

They Recycle
The San Jose Convention Center recycles everything they can get their hands on, from paper products, to carpeting, to food waste. What they cannot recycle, they donate— furniture, supplies, poster board, scrap metal, carpet rolls, and foam boards— to non-profit organizations, Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) and local school.

They Save Energy & Water
Below are some of the products and procedures the San Jose Convention Center has implemented to help save energy and water.

  • They installed an LED marquee sign was for advertising and informational purposes.
  • They set their thermostat at 68 degrees for heating and 78 degrees for cooling.
  • They turn off lights and computers when not in use and set timer or motion sensor switches for lighting.
  • They use electric service carts around the Convention Center and Cultural Facilities.
  • They wash equipment using a dry sweeper and/or with low-flow spray nozzles.
  • They installed more water efficient restroom fixtures, like water-less urinals in male restrooms.

They Offer Green Food & Beverage Options
The goal of the kitchen at the San Jose Convention Center is to create all meals using both fresh and/or organic ingredients. They offer organic menus and use local vendors, usually within a 150 mile radius for all food and beverage supplies. The Convention Center donates excess food to local food banks and shelters like the Sobrato House Shelter and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara.

Beginning May 1, 2008, the San Jose Convention Center will have the ability to compost all products that they provide.

They Do Business With Other Green Businesses
The San Jose Convention Center does business with other Green Businesses in the following ways.

  • They buy and use only Green Seal Cleaning Supplies.
  • They are a member of PG&E’s ClimateSmart™ program. The ClimateSmart™ program provides a voluntary option for Pacific Gas and Electric Company business customers to reduce their impact on climate change which creates a “Carbon Neutral” footprint for the Convention Center.
  • They are being evaluated by the Department of Energy for the possible installation of solar panels on the rooftops of the Convention Center. A reflective roof has already been installed at Parkside Hall, which will cause a 20% reduction in energy and will provide the San Jose Tech Museum with the capability to go solar.
  • Team San Jose is currently working towards becoming a Certified Green Business within the County of Santa Clara.
